A match made in heaven…
The powers of digital media and instagram led us to our latest magical find – the wonderful world of Stella+Alf. We have been on a long old search for a boutique label that fitted our ethical credentials, for what feels like ages. Stylish, sustainable and ethical fashion and Stella+Alf has all of that in abundance. So last Sunday despite the driving rain and cloudy grey skies, Ella and I set out on a mini road trip to the Lincolnshire Wolds.
We found Stella+Alf nestled at the top of the market square, in an old converted butchers shop. Inside I fell in love with the space, bright and airy, fresh and white, the light dancing over the Victorian glazed tiles – what a perfect studio. We meet Paris, fashion designer and Founder of Stella+Alf and over a mug of coffee, we enjoyed flap jack and millionaires short bread (how lucky were we) as we listened to Paris’s story and how she creates her capsule collections.
Stella+Alf make beautifully simple clothing and accessories that are easy-wearing and classic.
It’s important to us that our designs are simple, – less about trends and more about everyday. Each of our pieces are designed to be wardrobe staples, styles you can revisit time and time again. We choose not to design for mass-production. For this reason, we decide not to stick to the seasonal Spring/Summer, Autumn/Winter schedule, and instead release a steady flow of new pieces from month to month.
We hand make only a very limited quantity of each garment (around twenty to be more precise!) This means that each piece is unique and special-and when they’re gone, they’re gone! The design and manufacturing process is something to be valued and shared. All of our pieces are researched, designed, hand-cut and made in small batches by our team at the Stella+Alf studio in the Lincolnshire Wolds, UK. – Paris
Alf was a trawler man from Lincolnshire and Stella lived on his street. They married on the 1st November 1958. They had children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and a ginormous dog. They worked hard, laughed harder. Held hands, hugged big, shared sweets, smiled lots. They were part of a generation who didn’t just wear clothes once, for one season, simply because they were in fashion. Their clothes were selected and saved for. Worn, repaired and recycled. Grafted in, worked in. Cherished, loved, laughed in, lived in. Paid for in units of time well spent. They kept their feet on the ground and their imaginations in the clouds. – Paris
Stella+Alf’s granddaughter is designer Paris Hodson 24, she grew up in rural Lincolnshire, and moved to London to study fashion at The University of Westminster. Her skill in design and pattern cutting meant that she was happiest in the design studio, and after a few years in the fashion industry in both London and Edinburgh, Paris relocated back home to the Lincolnshire Wolds and began developing Stella+Alf. A strong feeling that there was something very wrong with the “fast-fashion” mindset which had quickly become adopted on the British High Street, and the firm belief that her clients should be able to view and appreciate how and where their clothes are made first-hand, helped shape the key principles at the heart of the brand. Her appreciation for all things sustainable and beautiful, have cultivated the pared-down, relaxed aesthetic, and the wonderfully simple concept …
The Ella Georgia girls are loving the simple understated look of all white for spring. Team white plimsols £35 with a pair of white jeans and a t-shirt or jumper and stack on the arm candy by layering up silver bracelets and bangles together. This Spring/Summer the stack is back and in this case less is not more! We say the more you mix and match the better so you can create your own unique style. You can keep to all silver or all gold but it even works when you mix it up. Our latest collection from contemporary Dutch jewellery designers, Anna and Nina shown above, work really well worn together or even on their own.
For SS15 it is denim, denim and even more denim. Whether it’s dark, torn or washed, denim is the way to go for spring. Denim jackets, jeans, dresses, shirts and skirts featured heavily on the Spring/Summer 2015 catwalks. Dress it up or dress it down, there is a look for you whatever the weather and whatever your mood.
Here at Ella Georgia we thought we would share some of our favourite casual denim looks. We are loving breton stripes with boyfriend, skinny or cuffed jeans or denim with black, be it a simple black sweater, top or biker jacket. From fun to urban there are a multitude of ways to wear this season’s trend. The big question is how best to style it?
From ballet pumps, slip on skate shoes to converse, pretty much anything goes. It is the jewellery and accessories that can really make the difference. The blue and white of breton stripes with denim lends itself to be teamed with silver. A Daniel Wellington watch, ‘Classy‘ or ‘Classic‘, stacked with bangles from Olia and Anna and Nina with a simple silver necklace be it a cross or tassel, is all you need for a strong yet understated vibe.
Jeans although casual by nature can still pack a punch when accessorised well. We all have our favourite jeans, whatever their style, you can dress them up to create your own, truly classic style. This spring the Ella Georgia girls are leaning towards classic black and it really works. Tie up black footwear with a black sweater, top, blazer or biker jacket and go for gold.
Layer dainty gold necklaces against black for an instant hit of chic and stack up the arm candy with bangles and bracelets for casual yet polished style.
At Ella Georgia we have always loved our eclectic mix of British, Swedish, Danish, Dutch and Spanish brands represented throughout our collections of jewellery and accessories. However this time, to launch our Spring 2015 collection, we are bringing you something a little new and a little different. It’s one of Europe’s most popular watch brands – coveted by celebs, fashionistas, top fashion magazines and blogs alike. You only have to look at any social media and they have taken the fashion world quite literally by storm. It’s timeless classic design that is functional and fashionable is just stunning and compliments our range of Scandinavian brands (Lite Kalabalik, Stylesnob, Becksondergaard, Erfurt and Tine K) well. It’s no other than Daniel Wellington.
The watch is back! and back to stay. For a while mobile phones took the place of a watch but now due to brands such as Michael Kors, they are making their way back on to the wrist with great style, stacked with bracelets and bangles to create a statement look. Daniel Wellington watches can be worn as a piece of jewellery, as an accessory and what we love most is that each and everyone has an interchangeable strap – so that you can change your look with the seasons.
Mother’s Day Gift Ideas
Looking for the ideal gift for Mother’s day? Then we think we have found it for you. This Mother’s day tell your mum just how special she is. Our new collection from Dutch contemporary jewellery designers Anna and Nina, is the perfect way to tell your mum just how much you love her. Anna and Nina is the creation of two fun and fashion-loving girls from Amsterdam. Inspired by the most important things in life – love, friendship and family – Anna and Nina’s Messages Collection has playful pieces for stylish girls who want to make a statement. Each luxe design, handmade in silver or gold-plated brass, spells out a message that reflects a joyful philosophy of life with a cheeky edge. At Ella Georgia we are loving the gold tag necklace and bracelet – ‘LOVE YOU TO THE MOON AND BACK”.
Anna and Nina’s second, Flash Collection betrays the pair’s wanderlust. Up-to the-fashion-minute cuffs recall exotic locations, encircling the wrist with palm trees and pineapples, while necklaces and earrings dangling stars and moons evoke memories of sultry nights under tropical skies. Wear their slogans and symbols on necklaces, bracelets and rings layered up for a chic but laid back vibe.
Who is Daniel Wellington?
The story behind Daniel Wellington begins with a trip half way around the globe where Filip Tysander, the founder of Daniel Wellington, met an intriguing gentleman from the British Isles. The man had the inspiring ability to be genteel but still relaxed and unpretentious. He had an impeccable style and loved to wear his watches on old weathered NATO straps. His name? Well, Daniel Wellington, of course. A strong friendship emerged between the two, and Filip was inspired not only by the man’s many great life stories but also by his class and timeless style of fashion. Loving the popular prep fashion look Filip decided to create the Daniel Wellington brand.
Daniel Wellington loved to wear his watches on old NATO straps. We liked the idea and feel of the mix so much that we wanted to incorporate the idea into our own line of watches. We felt it important to make the watch thin and elegant – we wanted a clean design, without too many features, that would look good with the different patterns and colours of the iconic NATO straps.
We believe that the traditional, yet crisp design blends together perfectly with the colourful NATO strap and elegant leather strap which will appeal to almost everyone with a sense for classic and timeless design – said Filip Tysander.
